The Official Jay Chou Thread

It's about time someone made an official Jay Chou discussion thread!! I'm lazy so I will copy pasta some info about him from his last.fm page:

Last.fm wiki info
周杰倫 (Jay Chou), born January 18, 1979 in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Linkou, Taiwan, is a popular Taiwanese musician whose music focuses primarily on R&B, rap, and balladry. He is known for his innovative usage of combining both Western and Chinese music styles to produce a fresh sound that is quite unlike what is produced in mainstream Taiwanese pop, and also unique lyrics which touch on various issues. His unique sound has gained enormous recognition throughout Asia, most notably Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan, as well as amongst the Chinese diaspora in the West.

Some basics
-He's been playing piano since the age of 4.
-He began his career by writing songs for popular artists like Jolin Tsai and Vivian Hsu.
-He's done collaborations with singers like Jacky Wu and Coco Lee (ex: He sang Dow Man Dan with Coco Lee; thanks CREA.tive!)
-He's more of a composer/arranger than a lyricist; he occasionally writes his own lyrics but almost all of the time he writes the musical instrumental scores to his songs. He often works with lyricist Vincent Fang.
-His style is usually R&B/hip-hop/pop.
-He released his first album, "Jay" in 2000. Since then, he has been consistent with his releases; he completes one album per year.
-He is one of the few artists whose songs go beyond the theme of love; he's sung about everything from family to pressing social issues like urbanization of the countryside, drug addictions to personal topics like coming of age, the paparazzi and school failures. He also sings about sports and martial arts and other varied subjects.
-He starred in movies such as "Initial D" and "Curse of the Golden Flower".

I personally think he's great; his compositions are always top-notch and his lyrics, heartfelt. He has a very soothing voice; some people think he mumbles too much but I find it ethereal, hehe. I think he's really similar to Ayu in that he's one of the most popular/powerful musicians in his country and goes beyond love in his music. He's definitely worth a listen!

My favorite songs are "Qing Tian", "Qi Li Xiang", "Fa Rue Xue", "Ye Qu", "An Hao", and "Yi Fu Zhi Ming". :yes

Jaaaaaaay:heart I really love this guy but the only news I hear of these days are about movies (except for Secret):(

edit: You could add that he sang Dow Man Dan with the popular Coco Lee:D

Yay, I haven't seen this thread one. I like his songs. The EP "Secret" is totally damn amazing! The song "A Secret I Can't Tell" is a perfect ballad!

Added that fact! :D And yeah, mostly it's been movie stuff, but he has confirmed that he will be releasing a new album this September!

Oooh, are you attending? Some pics would be great :love

CREA.tive 29th July 2007 10:24 PM

I'm glad he's releasing something soon. I mean, everyone releases at that time:D

I actually think his new song is plain. It didn't have that wow feeling I get every time I listen to a new song:(Nothing can beat Fa Rue Xue anyways haha:D

CREA.tive 30th July 2007 02:35 PM

according to 5music, Jay's new album will be released in November http://www.5music.com.tw/NewCdpre.asp I'm confused:shrug

Hmm, that IS puzzling. Well, I got the September news from Jay-Chou.net, which usually has their info correct, but I guess we'll see! He's released albums in both months before :yes

Lol okay I'm sure Jay-Chou.net is more reliable than 5music. But where did they learn it from? I mean it's not an official forum

Yeah, it isn't but I suppose a lot of their sources are people living in Taiwan who get access to news via music shows and the like? Nothing's official til it comes from Jay's "people" though...I tend to like his September albums more than his November albums, personally. I thought Ye Hui Mei and Still Fantasy are better than November's Chopin and Qi Li Xiang, though all of those albums are fantastic in their own right.

CREA.tive 31st July 2007 12:08 AM

Ye Hui Mei was fantastic:heart I also love November's Chopin. and the Eight Dimensions. Still Fantasy and Fantasy were great as well. The only album that I completely forgot is Qi Li Xiang. Seriously, none of the songs were fantasticamazingawesomemarvelous (Wo De Di Pan was very catchy though, especially the rapping part:D). They were good, nothing more:(

He is genius. Plain and simple. I was just going through his whole discography today, and there are so few songs that I don't enjoy. Everything is so skilfully crafted. A true artist. I would love to see one of his films, as I haven't yet.

I enjoy most of his songs on all of his albums! It's hard to find such a talented artist these days so I respect him veryyyy much as an entertainer.

I'm going to see his movie next week and the directors in Hong Kong have been talking about just how unique his style is and how he'll be a rising director or whatever. All this hype is going on in HK and in Asia surrounding the movie and the previews look stunning. The plot is so mysterious for once so I'm excited~ <3

Didn't he direct the short film for "Twilight's Chapter Seven" last year? Or am I remembering it wrong? 'Cause I really enjoyed that piece--it was mysterious and went with the song so well.

Maybe he did, maybe not, I really don't remember:o

Spoiler:
btw, namiie, your set is seriously amazing:heart I love love love it, the colors, blending, everything to it:luv2

Sakuragirl421 14th August 2007 08:17 PM

I watched the movie with my cousin (who is really picky about the movies that he watches) and we both agree that the movie is much better than most people expect it to be.

Jay is the one who came up with the plot and damn, once the movie picks up and you reach towards the end, a lot of stuff starts making sense. It feels like My Sassy Girl for some crazy reason but a lot of people online have compared it to Il Mare (Hollywood equivalent = The Lakehouse)... I don't know what else to say about it besides the fact that I WILL buy the DVD and I already bought the limited edition OST + the poster. <3 Gotta rewatch the movie to understand it better. <3

Waaah, that's good to know. And I love that feeling where you start to figure out the plot as it goes on and everything pieces together....and wow, My Sassy Girl? I seriously don't get that kind of vibe from it, lol, but I'm even more pumped to see it now! I'll have to wait for the DVD release though. :yes

Sakuragirl421 16th August 2007 06:21 PM

It reminds me of My Sassy Girl because towards the end of the second part, all the pieces fall together and you see why The Girl is that way and how she is connected to the guy. ^________^

Did yall know that where the movie is shot (technically not Jay Chou's HS but the school next to it) has now become a tourist attraction of sorts? I've heard that the surrounding area's schools have this Victorian feel just like the school in the movie. <333

mangoo_x3 20th August 2007 04:30 AM

Jay-Chou.net gets their news from news websites and did you know the Double J (Jay & Jolin) are going in direct competition, Jay having his album released late September and Jolin's on October.

:thud:thud:thud:thud:thud

Oh and I kinda created an thread for Jay cause I didn't see this thread, but I have more info on him on that thread if you guys want to know more about MY lovely Jay =]
