I Can See Music

(I guess this would go here. *shrugs* )

Has anyone else here ever heard of "synesthesia", specifically in the form of sound?

"Synesthesia is a condition in which the real information of one sense is accompanied by a perception in another sense. A person may see colors when hearing a sound or may experience a smell when seeing a certain color. Such a person is called a synesthete. There is much to be learned about this phenomenon."

I first heard about it from this Last.fm group, found it interesting, and then started researching it.

Anyone else here have it? Think they have it? Anyone think it's nonsense?

I've heard about this, there was an episode on this in House. I don't know anyone with it, and I doubt it is common. But that's no reason to think it is nonsense.

Ah, we were talknig about this on ayu-mi-x quite a few months ago.

I'm pretty sure Delirium-Zer0 is a synesthete.

It's pretty cool.

synesthete freak over here! *waves*
I'm the kind that associates music to colors. Music aren't only colorful to me, but those colors move in all kinds of speed. It's weird/nice and doesn't happen to all songs/artists.

^ Whoo! Same here. *high-fives*

You and I were meant to be. LOL
xD

My teacher said that this can be caused by connections (that shouldn't be there) in some nerves. Sometimes music can be bitter too. Õ_o

Calico 3rd December 2007 03:59 AM

I've heard of it. It's also possible to hear colors, which makes sense since the light hitting colors creates different frequencies.

I can associate colors to some songs, but not quite as "severe" as that. I wouldn't say that I have it.

Impracticable 3rd December 2007 04:08 AM

Yeah. If I Close my eyes while listening to a song I will see a specific color, but It dosent change, like, I will see the same color for the whole song.

Like, I'm listening to 'M' right now and I see beige.

But I also do this with people (I associate Marlon with the color black) and other things. So I guess it's not the same thing?

I dunno.

ImpactBreaker 3rd December 2007 04:18 AM

Yeah, I can also associate some songs with colors or memories, but it's more like I mentally visualize them, but I never actually get to see the color or feel the smell at all, so I can clearly say I don't have synesthesia at all.

But how can it make sense? I'd guess it's probably related to neurone synapses on the brain cortex and hippotalamus, related to sight (occipital lobe) and hearing (temporal lobe). It's rather complex, and I confess I've hardly read anything about synesthesia before.

EDIT:Oh, I found an interesting, actual (2007) article (but I can't guarantee on the validity of the informations though) that talks about possible hypothesis of what could happen in the brain of those who have synesthesia:

oh im one of them :D

kinomaniac 4th December 2007 05:15 PM

LOL!
Do you guys have to close your eyes to see the colors???
To me it's like the other way around... when listening to certain beats I can see different colours actually "dancing" around (more like moving).

I wonder if I have brain problems. My dad is like that too. o.Õ

Kobayashiwoof 4th December 2007 05:29 PM

Maybe its got to do with mental problems in the past?, my family has a history of umm... unstable people lmao. I think its a sense of creativity more so or something. I can also make myself make a scent if i think of something, been doing it since like i was little :|. I asked my bro some time ago if he could like smell a scent if he thought or saw something... he called me weird lmao.

voltron 4th December 2007 05:45 PM

I used to work with a woman who had it. She would see colors when she heard letters or names. I think Anthony = gray for her.
