Kumi Koda comment goes "rotten," suspended for month

Pop star Kumi Koda has found herself in trouble after making a careless remark on a radio show earlier this week. As a result, Koda will be putting all of her activities on hold for the time being.

The comment came on Tuesday night while Koda was hosting "All Night Nippon." The topic of her manager's marriage came up, and Koda was asked about when her manager was planning to have children. She made a seemingly light-hearted reply that "when women turn 35, their amniotic fluid goes rotten, so I'd like them to have a child by 35."

The inaccurate statement sparked a lot of criticism among listeners, particularly on the internet. Koda issued a public apology on Friday through the websites of Nippon Broadcasting System and Avex, but the damage had already been done. Cosmetics firm KOSE has temporarily removed her presence from its Visee site, and promotional events for her new album "Kingdom" have all been canceled. Koda was also scheduled to appear on a Tokyo FM show on Saturday, but she has been replaced by fellow Avex artist Ami Suzuki.

However, some of her television appearances will go on as planned, such as the already-recorded "Koi no Kara Sawagi" on Saturday and "Tetsuko no Heya" on Thursday.

According to Avex, the length of Koda's self-suspension has not yet been decided but is expected to last until the end of this month. Koda has a national tour scheduled to start in April, so she hopes to resume activities in time for rehearsals in mid-March.

There IS a REAL problem that rises in women who reach over 35 years old and pregnancy. I believe koda referred to that. She used the wrong explanation though, the amniotic fluid doesn't go rotten. After 35 years, the women eggs start to get old, since all women eggs exist ever since they're an embryo. After 35 years, the eggs go through faulty cell divisions and the risk for having babies with down syndrome and other chromossomic diseases start to rise after every passing year.

Maybe she just didn't use the right words, but I understand she definitely referred to that fact.

What do you think about it?
I thinks its so stupid she is suspended the rest of the month from promotion and whatnot.
Its not even that big of a deal.

Well, it's true that 35 years old women have more problems with pregnancy. But as a celebrity who lived her whole life in Japan, she should have been more cautious about it. I'm sure she knows very well what are the sensitive issues there.

Raiu-Ayu 3rd February 2008 01:12 AM

This is ridiculous! Kumi has done nothing wrong. Just cuz a bunch of morons (probably 35 or over) got offended by a comment that has some truth. Ok it may not rot and Kumi could have worded that better but come on, if you get pissed off at her for saying it you might as well get pissed at your doctor, or a midwife or the scientist person that first discovered it!

omgpeachsnapple 3rd February 2008 01:17 AM

I really think they should get over it. She probably could have phrased it better ... but who cares? It's not she told them they would all have ugly, mentally handicapped and deformed children and she didn't go around screaming any racial obscenities. She was being blunt. Big deal.
=\

^^ The Japanese do respect their elders :ss

I don't know why, but I have major difficulties believing that Koda's comment was supposed to be based on scientific/medical explanations about pregnancy. I really think she just talked without really thinking of what she was saying and ended up saying something slightly rude.

Yeah same here. I think she just said a random sweeping statement without even thinking about it or meaning to offend anyone. Personally I think she should think before speaking especially in a country which seems so sensitive.

dayumi 3rd February 2008 04:47 AM

what did she do?

Bad Wolf 3rd February 2008 04:50 AM

I really wish that JP record labels wouldn't be this ridiculous uptight to the point of putting a near strangehold on their artists--but I forgot, most labels just want them to be cash cows and products, right?

Kuu's comment, to me, doesn't seem tactless or even that bad of a thing to say. It's her opinion, right? Granted her opinion can only take her so far--she can think what she wants but that doesn't mean people have to like it, but SUSPENDING her? Christ.

It also makes me wonder what it would be like if the US adapted this policy on its artists, haha.

futureLOVE 3rd February 2008 04:50 AM

i think it's a pretty ridiculous situation...

...i mean, she's suspended??? what are they trying to do??? make the music industry disciplined like a high school?

truehappiness 3rd February 2008 04:56 AM

Well, she stepped out of her boundaries as a celebrity. To say something disrespectful about such a large population of women aged 35+ who probably don't have kids..o_o~

Wouldn't you be offended if someone flat out said that your kids might not come out right because your fluids are rotten? O_O

ayu_fan929 3rd February 2008 04:58 AM

I honestly don't care.

tbh, I don't see why many people would.

If you're a guy, you probably don't give a crap. If you're a teenage girl, you probably don't give. However, if you are someone who follows Koda and were planning on not having kids and heard that she said "hey, when you get old, you get dirty, right?"~... I think you might have a problem.

I don't really know why it's gotten to such a point where she had her site downgraded and her VISEE stuff revoked.

Maybe it was her tie-in with Kose? :\

There is scientific fact in what she said "kind of" but the way it was stated imo, seemed kinda crude :/

bondingo 3rd February 2008 05:02 AM

What in the hell did she say exactly? I followed the link to the Kuu thread and nobody said exactly what she said. All I know is she offended 35+ women by making a comment about them having babies.

After reading that, I have to say that this is absolutely moronic. It's like, if she said jokingly that two males could not have a kid together (since I am gay), it wouldn't have offended me. It's scientific fact that that happens to women as they age, not like she unveiled some hidden scientific truth that is somehow taboo. This would never happen in America.

ImpactBreaker 3rd February 2008 05:25 AM

Well, she was rude though, because she mentioned "rotten amniotic fluid". No pregnant women over 35 yo have rotten amniotic fluid (unless mother and fetus have been both dead for hours LOL), and the problem she was trying to refer which was most likely the risk for having a baby with Down Syndrome, still makes it sound rude because women who have pregnancies with Down Syndrome babies do not have rotten amniotic fluids :no

However, I voted for "It was kind of tacky, but not a big deal". I think she was just ignorant about the matter after all. I can understand where could people feel offended though.

CHE.R.RY 3rd February 2008 05:27 AM

"It was kind of tacky, but not a big deal."
As ImpactBreaker said, it was kind of rude...but people just need to calm down.
It doesn't make her a rotten person :shrug
I mean no one is perfect. We all say things we don't mean at times...or it just comes out wrong :/

UHPlus 3rd February 2008 05:31 AM

I choose it's not a big deal. It REALLY is not a big deal.
