A question for people who listen to music everyday...
Are you afraid of losing or damaging your hearing at all?
I'm the type of person who HAS to listen to music every day, or else I'd go mad. And I always set my iphone/ipod to the volume that I'm comfortable with (which means the volume is not too loud but neither too silent). But still, I tend to listen to music for a long period of time. No matter if it's just one or two hours respectively, or while sitting in front of my laptop for 4-5 hours. And I'm worried about my hearing like hell. Even if I'm only 16, I'm so afraid of losing it. That's why I set some limits to myself, but I often break them. It feels like an addiction that you cannot break from and as a result it damages you. Sometimes when I listen to music I can feel pain in my ears, and that's immediately where I turn off my iphone. But I'm still so worried, if I continue like this, what will my hearing be like in few years from now? Will I be deaf at 30, or even younger? Hell, you can take away my eyes, legs, arms, any part of my body, but please just NOT my hearing! And also, I go to this crazy school where we have to go every week and work in a VERY LOUD factory without any ear protection and it's really bothering me. And while I'm there working for 6 hours I listen to my ipod non-stop on a very high volume because otherwise I wouldn't be able to hear the song at all. Which is even worse. (now you tell me that we have passed through the time of slavery :/ But that's another story...) I wanted to know what do you guys think and is anyone having the same problem as me? Sorry if something like this has been already discussed, but I'd like to open the discussion again. |
im not afraid cos idk if its me obsessed with ayu but
i want to lose hearing on my left ear just like her im partiatly deaf in one ear so i always hear my music at full volume but even that i still want to turn up the volume more than my ipod will allow is a really big problem for me but im not worried and i really dont care i rather be deaf than blind im very addicted to music i know im creepy but thats me creepy jackie oh btw im 19 almost 20 O.O |
You don't have to worry about the amount of music you listen to, but about how loud and with what kind of speakers. If you listen to music with earphones, that's bad and will destroy your ears, headphones are better already, speakers are best: it's better when it's further from your ear. Turn down the bass a little, that's whats bad for your ears. and simply keep it at a low volume, I, for example, put a limit on my iPod at 50% volume, I NEVER go higher that way and if I'm in a too loud enviroment...I simply think of the music instead...and can't you bring your own ear protection to that factory? buy some, its worth it.
Of course, your hearing WILL suffer from the music and your work, but it will suffer way less if you do it like I described. I actually have hearing damages as well, had them already with 14, worst thing about it is: you don't notice it yourself unless you make a test...and my result was really bad(though still better than the average at that age, most people don't care for their ears before they are like...30 and can't understand a word anymore) |
I listen often. But I'm not using any headphones, earphones or anything. I'm using the loud speaker only. I don't like to much noise. So, I keep it slow and not disturbing anyone around me.

somemore hearing problems run in my family . My paternal grandpa & my dad are both deaf & so's my dad's older 2 brothers my dad's oldest brother went for surgery to correct his hearing problem & my grandpa have to rely the usage of a hearing aid to hear better & my dad being a real stubborn bull , refused to wear it from as long as I can remember , I communicate with my dad via SHOUTING & that goes for the rest of my family too My hearing problems started when I was 13 . It got worsen as time goes by because I would keep on hearing sounds regardless whether I cover or don't cover my ears & initally I thought I was going crazy til I went to seek professional help I got used to it now I suppose & my follow up ear appointment's coming up soon when I listen to music using my earphones & etc , I try to lower the volume because it might already worsen my hearing for all I care |
@ KarenPang
Tinnitus must be horrible...my father has it as well...and he refuses to wear a hearing aid as well xD |
My mum is actually deaf in her left ear as well like Ayu... but that's cos of a high fever.
Well, I think it's okay as long as you don't listen to music like those people who... listen using earphones and yet you can still hear the drums/whatever... O_o totally ott |
I don't have tinnitus or any other hearing disease, but my right ear is in very serious condition, ever since I went to this local concert and the speakers got messed up and they saterted giving out this reeaally high pitched noise... (my left ear wasn't affected much for some reason). Thus, when listening to my iPod or something, I don't wear the headphone on the right ear and try not to listen to too much loud music
|
@ waterballoon actually, even worse are people going to concerts without plugs, concerts nowadays are just way too loud for the human ear, one concert can decrease your hearing by 10% or more, you often hear the drums and so on of these people because the earphones simply dont close the ear properly, of course, its definitly too loud if others can hear it, but it not nearly as bad as concerts
|
i listen to music using earphones like 80% of the time
doesn't help either that i always have the music on as loud as possible... lmao. i can't help it.. and i often go to concerts and i even sleep with music on.. the louder the better for me :yes it's a bad habit and i better do something about it before it's too late |

at most what I can do's to do things to prevent my condition from worsening |
^ no cure? when did you go? for a few years there definitly is a cure already, but its risky for people with circulation problems

But I guess we should really do something about it xD. Wow, I never knew you guys had hearing problems when you were just 13 or 14... And I can only listen with my earphones because I don't have headphones (and can't wear them outside either) and can't listen on speakers because people around me would mind. And most of the time others around me can hear the music from my earphones, but if I decrease the volume to the point when no one around me can hear it, it's just too ridiculously silent. |
tinnitus is not a disease..it's an unespecific symptom that can be caused by several different ear diseases or other diseases that affects structures close to the ear/acoustic nerves. One person can feel tinnitus and have a completely different disease from another person who does.

I used to use headphobes a lot, but I almost never use them anymore, so I'm not as much worried about losing my hearing anymore, since I'm clearly not damaging it:yes |
I listen to music through headphones like 90% of the time...and not to seem reckless, but I've been doing this for like 3 years now, as well as going to loud concerts and I'm 16 and there's no hearing loss at all, so it's all good for now. But tbh if I ever do go partially deaf I'll start being more careful.

at least now I know it's not a disease but rather a symptom |

i only use earphones when i work out at the gym.. an hour daily, with quite big volume :lech
I don't have problem with my hearing but I'm afraid to use them more than an hour daily; i don't wanna lose my hearing.. I tend to play loud music while I'm driving tho.. |
^ as I said before, the AMOUNT of music you listen to is not very important, but the volume, 1 hour of loud music is worse than 5 hours of medium-volume music, you can use them more, just make it more quiet! one too loud note can already destroy much
|
I've heard from lots of people that actually listening to music for a long period of time is even worse than loud music for a short period of time. But honestly IDK.
