I actually think that Madonna "copies" from Ayu. The giant cross from her 2006 Confessions Tour? I remember seeing a cross in Ayu's Countdown 2005 as well.
I also remember seeing Ayu's foxtail as early as Surreal (she performed with a white foxtail on NHK's Popjam). That would be in 2000. I saw Madonna's foxtail on her 2001 Drowned World Tour. There might be an earlier instance, though... Of course, I think some unknown girl in Harajuku wore the foxtail first
Madonna is a VERY clever artist. She gets a lot of her ideas from sources that are underground and not mainstream, therefore not that well-known, so that she always seems "fresh" and "original". So everyone please don't use the argument of her not knowing who Ayu is. Remember Madonna's Hollywood music video? And the unknown European fashion photographer whose work it copied? I wouldn't be suprised if she knew who Ayu was.
Anyway, the idea of "copying" expressed in this thread seems too oversimplified for my taste.
Ayu_Jayson said it best: "Ayu does mix in some of her style in stuff she takes reference from so it becomes unique". Same goes for Madonna, whose influences are from around the world. Same for John Galliano. Same for The Beatles. All these great pop artists.
Originality, whatever that means, doesn't exist in the world anyway. Everything in this world, its different cultures, ideas, and people, will always have things in common, will always find in each other the most suprising similarities, and that's what makes life so beautiful.
