The original term comes from when singles were released as vinyls.

The single was on side A, and because remixes weren't too common when vinyls were the main format, the B-side was usually another song either from the album or a new song.

Although now with CD's it's impossible to term it that way, and it's rather ridiculous anyway. A single meant a single song hence the name. Ayu has her treble and quadruple A-sides though so c/w is hardly too strange.
