It sounds like when you first download the songs they save as "files" which don't have a specific extention or as .dat files. Nevertheless, WinMedia usually plays them without problem. My suggestion is to add the .mp3 extention either by 1) renaming the files in WinMX to include the .mp3 extention or by 2) renaming the files in the folder you share your music in.
Instructions:
For 1), open WinMX and click on the "Shared File Types" icon in the "Shared Files" folder. Make sure it includes .dat files or "files." Then click "OK." If the files appear, right click them and select "Rename." Lastly, change/add the .mp3 extention. When you open them in WinMedia it might say that the extention doesn't match the file and would you like WinMedia to play it anyway. Either way, the file still works.
For 2), open the actual folder (in Windows) where your files downloaded to. Click "Tools > Folder Options > View." Deselect "Hide Extentions for Known File Types." All of the files in the folder should appear with the full file name and extention. Select the non-mp3 ones and rename them to include the .mp3 extention. Then the icon will change to match the program you use to listen to them. (In this case, a sheet of paper and a WinMedia icon.)
If all goes well, the files will be able to work in the WinMedia playlist and work in Kazaa's audio section. Hope that helps!
