The meaning of
ningyou is specially interesting, in my opinion. That a doll has the shape of a human...
As for
hanabi: I could imagine that it's probably as popular for imagery in Japan as
sakura (cherryblossoms). Because they both represent something beautiful yet fleeting (love, life).
