Well, I once showed my friends an SCawaii magazine with Ayu on it. They all commented on how chubby her upper arms were. Me, being a huge Ayu fan, felt a little uneasy. I told them "Oh, she probably just gained a bit of weight recently, she normally looks fabulous". The thing is, being an Ayu fan, I want other people to appreciate her as well. Let's be honest, part of Ayu's success is because of her appearance. She's beautiful. She has the best face and hairstyles, but her body isn't always well received.
I think people just want Ayu to be perfect. They aren't being malicious when they comment about her weight.
Also, from Ayu's perspective: she knows that she's a brand that must appeal to the masses. She's probably as critical about her appearance as we are. She certainly doesn't look like someone who would settle for being "average-looking".
