To understand death metal you really have to look past the vocals. I guess it's easier for us musicians. But guitarists like Jack Owen of Cannibal Corpse and drummers like Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal) are as technical musically as classical musicians. If you understand arpeggios, time signatures, scales, etc....well music theory in general you would be more likely to be able to appreciate death metal for what it is. To play that kind of music you have to have an unreal amount of dexterity and endurance. One of the first death metal songs I learned to play was the Carcass song ''Blind Bleeding the Blind". Even now when I play it after all these years, my wrists and fingers are still somewhat sore when I am done. It's not as easy to play as some would think. I assure it's more than a bunch of growling.

Besides if the vocalists were crooning like Steve Perry (the guy from Journey) it would most definitely sound out of place given the frenetic speed and heaviness of the music. Besides there is more to music than vocals.
