Personally, I ultimately don't care. The only thing about smoking is that it could have adverse affects on her health and her voice. And I'd agree that she probably doesn't smoke that much otherwise there would probably be more photographic evidence, especially in Japan where smoking isn't considered as much of a huge deal like here.
As for veneers constituting as actual surgery, if I'm in the dentist's chair and they have to sedate me to do hours worth of work to permanently change the appearance (as I've been through about seven times now) it's surgery. Veneers may not be as hardcore as crowns/bridges but to me that's still getting oral surgery.
