I personally believe that if you don't like an artist, then do as your parents taught you and don't say anything at all unless it's something positive. It's not difficult at all to simply not listen to their work or follow their career and leave it at that. All you're accomplishing by trash talking is hurting other people's feelings and creating fan rivalries.
Like most of you already know I'm sure, this is really bothersome. I get so much **** from all types of people for being a Madonna fan on a daily basis. "It's funny how everybody mentions my name, but they're never very nice..." They say all sorts of terrible things about her to me thinking that I will either just laugh it off or start up an argument with them. Everyone has their shortcomings I realize and even though I think the world of her I don't like to give people the time of day by arguing with them. They are still going to judge her based on the person she was over a decade ago no matter what I say, so I just tell them to ignore her and that's that. Nitpicking superficial things about people we don't even know and will probably never even meet, how sad is that?

At the end of the day, celebrities are still people just like you and I. Why put so much energy into something that is so negative and unproductive in the first place?
