I think it's mostly the tie ins with dramas/animes. a lot of people know utada and ayu because of their songs for well known animes.
I feel that the reason why Utada and ayu rose to popularity so quickly was because they were new faces in the industry, and everyone is interested in new things. but if you notice now, they're not so new anymore and both of them have been declining in popularity
