Names in Japan are very confusing when written. Basically, the parents can choose the hirigana they want for the name, and it does indeed have different meanings in how it's written.
So I'm not sure of Ayu's name's meaning, aside from "fantastic singer" and other such compliments, but I thought maybe this might help fill in some info. ^_^
