The chart seems to measure artists from several decades, not just from the past few years. While Ayu may have gotten things moving in the Jpop world, that accounts for only the past 5 years or so, not like other artists on there who may have been around much longer. I quite doubt that this was made because people hated Ayu or anything, as Ayuspeed suggested. Sure... we all like Ayu, and think she's awesome, but when you're contending with much more well-known artists in the past like Seiko Matsuda, a woman who's been around for over 20 years and is still going strong, Ayu can't compare to that.

In a sense, this could be related to the issue about Hikki being in Guiness. Ayu may be the #1 topic here, but that doesn't mean she's #1 globally, or sells the most CDs. Ayu may be on billboards and such, and she may be a good part of Avex's share, but once again, it's overall figures that allow Ayu to get at least 42 in the HMV rankings.
