what she means by "step back" is by "holding back/holding their tongues" and protecting themselves and each other so they won't get hurt, not literally step back, hahahaha. *ahem* yeah. and like what Delirium-Zer0 said, they did it so they could avoid speaking of and confronting each other about the painful things that happened.
