Yes, that is what I was talking about. Seiko is already a really good example. After she lost her no. 1 streak in singles, her sales (or ranking more precisely) fell sharply. It's like, her last single was no. 2 (the broken one), then the next single was already down to no. 28
. Of course she did struggle back to top 20 or she even had one no. 1 single later on, but you can see her chart life technically ends right after her no. 1 streak is broken.
She is still having a no. 1 streak at this moment because avex tries to put her releases on the safe weeks. That means, there are no strong competitors around. This applies to the artists who are still having no. 1 streaks as well. Once they meet new artists like SCS and get defeated, the magic will be gone. Do you guys believe that avex will try their best to put ayu on safe week again once the streak is gone?? 50-50 for me.

I dun think we are pessimistic or so. Rather I'm looking into reality. No one stays on the top forever. As we worship some artists, we have to prepare for a day that they're not as popular as before. Also, if I started loving ayu after 2004, probly I wouldn't feel such strong contrast. But I was there when she was on the very top, beating practically every single artist out of her way (except hikki
). 1999 - 2003 was my favourite era because my most beloved ayu and hikki conquered the charts (single or album, monthly or yearly). Now ayu still maintains her no. 1 streak (which is a good thing btw), and hikki still has the strongest digital sales in Japan (a really good thing).
And talking about why Johnny conquers the yearly single charts nowadays... I do have a thought. Is it because their hardcore bases are pretty rigid? I mean, their sales neither increase or decrease as much as compared to 5 - 6 years ago. But other artists declines so much, so it makes them look shinier than it should be?
