I've always thought that too - that her name alone sold that album so well in Japan. That could explain why this one did badly too. A lot of people bought Exodus simply because of the fact that it was Utada and that was it and then a lot of people actually didn't like that album at all. Now they may be more wary to purchase her English language albums.
btw, I'm not sure counting digital sales really would help Ayu as some people are suggesting. According to Chaku Uta, Next Level really hasn't been doing all that well I don't think. Already in the dailies most of the songs aren't on the chart anymore. Also keep in mind that if you added in digital sales, everyones sales would look higher including several female artists whose cd sales don't usually look that great. So it might not actually be a helpful thing to want Ayu to do.
