Il culto più antico rivolto a Maria Maddalena, risalente alla fine del IV secolo, è quello che si svolgeva nei riti della Chiesa Orientale la seconda domenica dopo Pasqua, chiamata "delle mirofore". In quel giorno si commemoravano le donne che il giorno dopo la crocifissione e la morte di Gesù si recarono al sepolcro con gli unguenti per imbalsamarlo. Tra le mirofore un ruolo importante l'aveva Maria Maddalena, l'unica che è sempre citata in tutti e quattro i vangeli canonici. Il primo centro della venerazione della Maddalena fu Efeso, dove si diceva fosse pure la sua tomba, nell'ingresso della grotta dei Sette Dormienti; si sposta poi a Costantinopoli, dove all'epoca di Leone il Filosofo (nel 886) sarebbe stato trasferito il corpo, e si diffonde poi nella Chiesa Occidentale soprattutto dal XI secolo. Il culto di Maddalena si diffuse in Europa ed i suoi devoti costruirono numerose chiese in suo onore: la più nota è quella gotica di Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (1295) dove è conservato quello che si dice sia il teschio della santa, ma la prima in cui si formò il culto di Maria Maddalena è l'abbazia di Vezelay dove già nel 1050 si diceva fosse conservato il corpo. Di recente, soprattutto in seguito al successo del libro Il santo Graal di Baigent, Leigh e Lincoln, è diventata famosa la chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena di Rennes-le-Château nella regione dell'Aude.
In Francia si racconta che le tre Marie, scampate dalle prime persecuzioni, approdarono nelle paludi della Camargue, dove un paese porta il loro nome: Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Il culto della Maddalena, peraltro, non è una prerogativa esclusiva della Francia, come dimostra l'esistenza di molti edifici a lei dedicati ad esempio in Italia, quali la chiesa parrocchiale dell'isola della Maddalena, la Chiesa arcipretale di Longare, la Chiesa parrochiale di Bordighera, il Duomo di Desenzano, e molti altri.
Come santa cattolica, le reliquie di Maria Maddalena furono venerate a Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, Provenza, attraendo una tale folla di pellegrini che venne eretta una grande basilica verso la metà del tredicesimo secolo, una delle più famose chiese Gotiche del sud della Francia. Benché le sue ossa siano state disperse durante Rivoluzione Francese, si disse che la sua testa fosse rimasta nel suo sacrario in una caverna a La Sainte-Baume vicino a Marsiglia. La Chiesa cattolica celebra la sua festa il 22 luglio.
The veneration of Mary Magdalene
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The most ancient cult dedicated to Mary Magdalene was in the end of IV century and took place in the rituals of the Oriental Church the second Sunday after Easter.
In that day they celebrated all the women that, the day after the crucifixion, went to the sepulchre with the oils for embalm the body of Christ. Among these women an important role was given to Mary Magdalene the only one existent in all the four canonics scriptures.
The first place of veneration of M. M. was in Epheso (Greece) where it is told to be also her grave; then her burial has been transferred to Costantinople during Leone the Philosoph era (886 a.C) and after this transfer her cult began to diffuse among the Occidental Church fideles in the XI century.
The cult of the Magdalene was broadcasted in the whole Europe and her fideles built many churches in her honor: the most famous is the gothic one of Saint-Maximin la Sainte Baume (1295) where is cherished the skull of the Saint; but the very first church where the European cult grew up was the Vezelay abbey where already in 1050 was told to be conserved the holy body.
Recently afterwards the success of the book “The Saint Graal” og baigent-leight-Lincoln became famous the Church of rennes-le-Chateau.
In France it narrates that the Three Mary, escaped from the first persecutions, arrived in the bogs of Camargue (a France’s region), where a village still brings their names: Saintes Maries de la mer (the three Marys of the sea). Anyway the cult of the Magdalene is not a prerogative of France, but in Italy exist many buildings dedicated to her: for example the church of the Maddalena Island (in sardinia, I add that’s the most gorgeous natural place in the world!!), the Chrches of Longare, Bordighera and the Desenzano’s Dome (in the Garda’s lake banks).
As a catholic Saint, her relics are celebrated in the church of Saint Maximin la Sainte Baume in Provence, one of the most famous gothic churches of south France: this celebration attracts a huge crowd of pilgrims.Even though her bones were lost during the French Revolution is narrated that her skull rest in her sepulchre in a cavern of La Sainte Baume near Marseille.
The catholic Church celebrates her the 22nd July.
