probably didn't pass the exam or the test for u to pass the grade/level. in other words, it's not just a baby test... there are tests/exams that either make or break you in high school you know.
btw on the topic of ayu's grades:
during the Scholar!Nu idol video, she was asked "what are the subjects that you're poor at?" she literally listed
everything from science, math, history, to english and everything in between! i can tell she really hates school. i forgot which subjects she said she was good at... but one was music.
