Pulmonary edema is not a disease on its own...it is most often secondary to another cause. The msot common example would be pulmonary edema caused by severe heart pump failure, so the finding of PE needs you to find what exactly was the cause that lead to it. If he has no history of chronic heart failure, an acute heart failure could be caused by acute myocardial infarction. And then an acute myocardial infarction in someone who's that young could be justified by use of drugs like cocaine or meth, so the finding of pulmonary edema on necropsy isn't exactly excluding of other causes for his death. Also narcotics overdose is one of the several causes that can lead to pulmonary edema. Or massive vomit aspiration from deep alcoholic coma, who knows (but I guess they didn't find signs of that). The results of the toxicologic studies still need to reach a conclusion here, I'd say.
