I'm not taking my opinion as Japan's opinion, I just read more than once, that she was never seen as a strong vocalist (but she was, and wouldn't be surprised if she still is, seen as a good songwriter, composer, performer and fashion icon)

Actually Seiko was always considered a good vocalist. Ayu was never known as like amazing or something, but she was known as good at least. I don't remember ever seeing Japanese media calling her a bad vocalist until recently.
