I don't think SM ever thought of them being a group. They were an unofficial group during their training days Just friends together, like Junsu had a group with his school friends

I remember Yunho telling that his ex-girlfriend thought that he was cheating on her, because he went for a drink with Heechul and she thought Heechul was a girl (looking at him from behind)
