Uh, I would heavily debate that.

AKB48 has 90 girls and I'm sure with that many a large chunk of them would be annoying.

There are really too many to know anything about them individually unless you are really obsessed - I have enough trouble keeping track of Hello Project and that is way less people! Plus, I've never once seen a performance where AKB sings live. (I'm sure some live performances exist, but every time I see them on tv they are lip synching) That right there puts MM ahead in the talent category for me. BUT AKB's songs have been better lately, so they deserve to sell more than MM. Also, I don't know if AKB, like MM, is actually "popular". I still think the vast majority of their sales are because of WOTA/Otaku etc. There humongous drops after their first days support that. I haven't seen much evidence that girls or kids like them. (as I've seen people claim)
I think what really drove those first day sales was the competition. There are two versions of the single and a different b-side with different "teams" singing on each one and it was marketed as a sales competition towards the fans to have their favorite team sell the most.
