Well, I guess I could see "LAZER" being a little different for a BoA song, but that's it.
IDENTITY is different from BoA's previous albums because for the first time she is significantly involved with the production. BoA is credited as co-producer for the album and out of 11 songs, she has made substantial contributions to 6 of them (lyrics and music for 4; lyrics for 2).

And, to me, the album sounds mature because of the decisions made to place emphasis on the lyrics. The "boring" production of the melodies and arrangements has the effect of drawing attention to the lyrics and what they have to say.

With the album being titled "IDENTITY" and BoA as co-producer I think it's safe to assume that the focus of the album is herself and not some loose concept, therefore she wants her message to be understood. If a song is overproduced, it could distract the listener and the message has a greater chance of being lost or diluted.

I think people who don't understand the Japanese language are at a disadvantage when listening to this album because they're only getting half the message. It was only after I started searching out translations of the lyrics that I felt I understood what BoA was trying to do.
