I don't think her fanbase is shrinking really... unless you're going by sales, then maybe yes. But as for fans (not copies of CDs) she seems to have remained rather consistent. Just look at her BEST ARTIST poll numbers... they barely change as the years go by!

I think she's just a very well respected artist in the music industry. Pretty much all of my friends in Japan know her and respect her a great deal, especially after her hearing loss, but they don't necessarily listen to her music. They're all still stuck on M.
