However, world wide Ayumi is known at last to a certain extent because she's more than a fly by night singer..she's an artist as well as a pop icon. so to answer your question more directly in terms of popularity in korea Girls Generation would be deemed more popular (its their own field) in japan Ayumi would be more popular. As for world wide recognition Ayumi would win.
