Morning Musume sold 1.6 million copies of their
Love Machine single when they were in their prime so I don't think you can say that they weren't able to appeal to a wide demographic. You don't sell that many copies to only wotas.
AKB48 is just entering their prime and their appeal is at its widest right now just as it was for Momusu back then. If they can continue selling so well for years to come then you can say that they're more successful than Momusu but until that happens it's just history repeating.
