Yeah, it always sounded more like an American English final "r" sound to me. For example, in the NEVER EVER studio track and live performances, I always hear "kimi wa...nani wo...ino
RERRRRRRRRRRR!" I love that song and others from the era, but the slurred "u" sounds so out of place, it kinda pulls me out of the moment when I'm listening.
