My host mom just asked me about it, too.
In the end, I think that this shows just how Ayu won't compromise for anything but what her heart really wants. She won't settle for a marriage just to be with someone, just because she's at a certain age and that's what's "expected" when you get older; she doesn't want to give up anything about her life -- her career, her home (Japan), her dedication to both -- and that means that you have to make sacrifices in other places. I hate that it has to come down to this, but... at the same time I really admire her. I'd rather her and Mannie be divorced and happy with their lives than together and miserable.
