This actually reminds me of a conversation I once had with my art professor.
He was telling me about these people he knew in Africa that once received a sculpture from some artist. And the first thing they did with it, was add all these nails and studs to the sculpture.
And he said that his other friend saw them doing this, and freaked out, cause they were altering the artwork. But their reasoning was, that in their culture, whenever they receive an art piece, they immediately alter it to make it theirs, and it becomes something special that way.
It was supposed to be a commentary on how "attached" we are to our artworks. And how we horde them and obsess over them, and how sometimes we forget that art is supposed to be shared.
Whatever. It reminds me of this. A little. I don't think it's disrespectful....in that sense, but I think it's just a little more sad that you're taking away something very specific, instead of adding, or changing, just because you can't appreciate it, or see the value in it.
That's the difference anyway.
