Actually, in NTV Interview she did in 2004, she revealed her thoughts about that time. She said that she wanted to get away from Avex, because they only saw her as a product, and not a woman, human, or artist. When the interviewer asked if that meant to retire, (if I recall correctly) she said that she didn't know, but regardless, she wanted to get away. But then she made the decision that she would stay within Avex and fight from the inside against it.

I just watched this for the first time the other day and she did say this.
