My parents are divorced too. I don't know how it is in other countries, but here in Germany you have actually to live seperated for at least one year before you can file for divorce. But only if both partners agree. For the case one of them doesn't want the divorce you have to live seperated for three years before you can file for divorce.
My parents for example shared a lawyer (they are good friends now) because otherwise it would have been to expensive. And they told the court that they were living seperately for 9 months already so that the divorce could be finalized earlier.
