You can still compare the fact that they are both artists.
I feel that Ayu used to always be at the forefront of music in Japan. Her genre styles almost always seemed to usher in a new era or time for music, always sounding fresh. She was a very modern artist. But lately, she has been doing more of a "throw-back" sound... which is just so strange knowing the type of artist she has been in the past.
Kumi on the other hand, has embraced a more modern sound, while still sounding original. There are a ton of Kumi songs I love, but I could never imagine Ayu singing them.
