Gaga may be obnoxious and pretentious as hell and the song may be lower quality than some of her other stuff, but Katy's song has personality?
Its as safe as it gets. IMO, she's a textbook popstar with textbook songs (E.T. was a gem, though. THAT you can say is distinct in her discography) and Roar is more of her standard fare. Let's not pretend its something that it isn't

Well, to be honest, it's not like Gaga is all out of safe zone... She does have some songs here and there that are pretty interesting on their own (Paparazzi comes to mind), but most of her discography is pretty much your everyday radio-friendly pop music with high dose of pastiche and unworked references... She is just channeling older stuff (being it either Madonna, David Bowie, Britney Spears, Queen, Gwen Stefany, Elton John, Christina Aguilera, etc) without giving them much of her own most of the time. Her music is also very formulaic. Her image is far more outrageous and risky than her sound, and even so, even her image is not that much out of the box either.
