I think that if Ayu completely separates herself from Japan, she -will- lose her audience.
Maybe not immediately, but eventually.
Many Japanese people don't like flashy lifestyles for their pop stars. That's just how it is... Perhaps it's because the "normal" people live such mundane, systematic, unselfish lives that when they see pop stars living so freely, it makes them jealous and hateful. I mean people can't even dye their hair here for most company jobs. :-p
Plus, people don't even know she's still releasing new music half the time because "they haven't seen her on TV."
But tbh, the only way I see a lasting relationship working out is if she part-times it in the US, considering he's in school.
