I do also think what Gustavo said is right. Having the mouth open makes her face a little longer, and shows off more of the jawline. Her face is definitely round. To me, it also makes the pictures more dynamic. Like she's mid motion, or, about to change positions.
I don't mind her hypersexualization, one, because I like it, and two because...it's really different from the other dominant types of sexuality in Japan.
I think she looks good more often than she looks bad. And when she does look somewhat questionable, I just laugh or shrug it off. She's always had a really weird sense of style...to me anyway. I try my best not to take her so seriously.

OH MY GOD. THIS SO MUCH. So many Westerners do not get this.
I feel like Kuu's face might look totally fake to some because Koda Kumi is a persona that Koda Kumiko created. Personally, I feel like its a result of the teasing and crap she constantly got for being "unattractive". Like, she couldn't be Japan's idea of sexy, so she made her own kind. And even still, I have no issues with it, I'm just making my own conclusions as to why some may not like it.
