The ballad version of Contrail really brought out a whole new level of emotion that I didn't hear in the original song. Especially since (it sounds like) she resung the vocals. Those lyrics really felt like they meant something.
However. that aside. I consider Namie Amuro one of my favorite female Jpop artists. I would even go as far as to put her in my top 5. But I don't listen to her for the emotion and passion that I hear in utada or Ayu. She doesn't compose, arrange, play any instruments, sing all her own backup vocals, write lyrics. She really doesn't help out with the music.
