Well, bootlegs are great for when you're missing the music itself. These days digital files - both legal and not legal - are readily available, so most people buy physical CDs for the collectability. That wasn't really the case back before 2003 or so, when if you wanted good mp3s you'd have to scour people's collections on soulseek, search in Japanese on napster, and find a DCC bot on IRC who didn't reject your connection. The only way to get Ayu's entire discography was logging on to someone's FTP server if they were nice enough to give you the login information for it.
It's hard to believe there was a time when even MP3 files of commercially available CDs by a huge pop star were rare or hard to find, but that time did happen.... and bootleg CDs were a huge help to getting an artist's complete collection of work.
