Most opera singers aren't as amazing as some old legends... nowadays they are casted by appearance too... so it is not necessarily better or more amazing than something/anything. Even opera singers can suck xD besides, I think it also requires a lot of technique and skill being able to sing as a (professional) pop singer and most important, being able to make the audience care about the lyric/emotion.

Gurl I love your comment. but even if it is not 'your thing', it is hard to understand opera/ballet. Most operas are Italian, French or German language and the aria structure has been changed a lot during centuries because composers eventually agreed that the story should be more important than virtuosity. And even though it is very 'civil' opera buffa -style (read comedy or easy interpretation of the melodrama) nowadays people need to read themselves into the translated story background to understand the meaning of it. That's the main dealbreaker too, because it is the public that must empathize with the character and not really 'connect themselves' with the song as people want to nowadays. Remember that opera guy singing in the Pizza Ristorante commercial? Well, people love the voice/song, even though he is in the play an asshole and actually sings how easy women are. I do not know how many people know that but... I think nobody has honestly cared about it haha.

And ballet... well, if you do not know the story or meaning of their mimicks, it will only be good dancing. I am no expert, but still... I could understand that even though the art is very respectable, it could be hard to click with it. It is soooo different than we see and hear nowadays.

Btw, sorry if I sound like a miss know-it-all in defence I can say that despite I study theatre design I absolutely hate to listen to opera :p Except for La Traviata
