I'm a little more on board with the covers, but still wonder the same: Why this? That said, I think the style is fresh and I'm not exactly sure what I would envision as better covers in the same style.
I will say that the biggest misuse of photos I remember are the ones included in the FIVE booklet, with Ayu pinning back her short hair. (I think the following images SHOULD have been the FIVE covers...) Maybe a recreation of these would have been more fitting?
