I had went alone a few weeks after I graduated high school - couldn't speak the language, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how the FUCK to get OUT of the Shinjuku subway station for like 2 hours (after flying 15 hours of travel mind you), and ended up walking an hour out of my way in the wrong direction the night before Ayu's concert when I decided to head out to Shibuya (leading me to walk 2 hours in the rain to get back to my hotel). Now, don't let this scare you - after the trip, you really gain a sense of "wow, look at what I'm capable of doing," and you realize that many boundaries in life are only limitations that you set on yourself.
Go for it!

Shinjuku station is a nightmare

I lived in Tokyo for a whole year and by the end of that period I still wasn't able to figure out the right exit every time I went there. I usually just decided to chose the first exit I found and figured out where I had to go from outside, which worked because I knew Shinjuku well, I just couldn't understand that station
