Using the BoA example, I don't think Koreans like pop. Look at how much her popularity rose after My Name. Pick up and shinhwa cd, pick up se7en, 1tym, epik high, hyori, etc etc etc. One thing I've noticed in the kpop market is how much koreans like a) r&b/hip hop and b) ballads. There are always exceptions tho.
Namie is more popular in Korea because A) she dances and B) she does r&b and C) she held 2 concerts there. I don't know if there are any hamasaki-like artists in Korea, there's always a chance she has a following, but it's not like she'd rival BoA or Namie in terms of popularity.
