They talk about a large range of topics, happy and sad ones. It ranges from "what's your type?" to "do you have anything to repent for?". I wouldn't read too much into it.
And like you said, Japanese society is no stranger to suicide. It might be a jarring question to you, but it's probably less so to a Japanese person.
