Shaving ones head is not really a sign of a mental breakdown in Japan either. It's a form of penance and illustrates their shame for everyone to see. It's been historically a known action for a long, long time. That's why I don't even buy that it was a "mental breakdown", this was a long standing form of attrition. That was her apology for having a boyfriend.
