She had pretty big tie-ins over the years, especially with Sony products I believe. In general, artists earn more from touring and goods than they do from the music itself - that part has not changed over the years.
That said, I'm pretty sure artists are paid differently in most Japanese contracts. For many it is more of a salary-based system, from what I understand. I think it is also common practice for labels to own the music (even if the artist wrote, composed, etc.). Though I could be mistaken in some of that.
