And completely unrelated but also interesting: I came across
this interview where Crystal Kay discusses her background, cultural identity, career, brief stint in the USA... It can get annoying to listen to, since they apparently thought it appropriate to record this with poor equipment in a busy coffee shop, but I really liked hearing her thoughts! I didn't know she was managed by her mom for a long time in her early career, kudos to her mom for doing all that! The way she described the progression of her Japanese career was interesting (she seems to feel like her career was helped along by Hikki and MISIA making r'n'b big in Japan, and she talks about "a more pop-py song" [Koi ni Ochitara, which she doesn't even mention by name, lol] becoming big and kinda altering the course of her career a little). She also talks about her attempt to hit the US music market, and while it's a little sad to listen to her talk about the failure, I think it shows nice maturity and self-reflection that she's able to analyse what went wrong and move on with her life.
