After writing that superlong post I noticed the genius behind MASK. It seems some don't like that it doesn't have a climax, but I think that's the point; the lyrics don't have a resolution, so neither does the song.
The first refrain is about pretending to have overcome pain, but actually only masking the scars with new wounds, in the second she asks questions about how long she'll be a specific way or since when she's become a specific way, to then end the song by singing that she's again going to mask wounds with wounds. Usually you'd think there'd be a strong forward-looking message, a strong resolve to change things, but the way the song just fizzles out so to speak reflects admitting that masking scars with new wounds will continue, admitting weakness in a way. I also like how the title evokes the meaning of a mask you wear, but mask also has the meaning of covering something.
