Not just during WWII. The Japanese occupied Korea from 1905-1945. It was the war and Japan's surrender that ended to colonization. The Japanese took over the entire country, made the Koreans speak Japanese and take Japanese names, banned the study of Korean history and discouraged Korean culture, banned Korean-language newspapers, made the people worship at Shinto shrines. I can really understand why some of the older generation would have such a hostile attitude toward the Japanese.
