Actually calling a capo cheap, is almost like saying that about pedals. I can't think of any guitarists that don't use pedals regardless of genre. As far as covers, I don't spend a whole lot of time working on them. I do a few. I picked up a guitar to write my own material. I know covers are a necessary evil especially when playing clubs. But I left a band because I was sick of playing Nirvana covers. But the extent of my covers are pretty much a few Black Sabbath songs, some Pink Floyd, some Metallica, some AC/DC, and that's about it. I just prefer to spend more time working on my own stuff. Since my style is progressive my songs tend to run in excess of 8 minutes, I spend a lot of time on it. One of mine my step-dad says sounds almost like Tool. Which I look at as a compliment. But I wasn't intentionally trying to write a piece that was a Tool clone. It just came out that way. For comparison, if you are familiar with King Crimson or Porcupine Tree, that is kind of my writing style. Kind of broad, kind of atmospheric, yet still heavy.
